What sealants are
Sealants are thin layers of resin placed in the pits, fissures, and grooves of molars to prevent decay on those surfaces. The majority of decay on back teeth starts right there — in the grooves and pits of the chewing surfaces — especially during the first few years after the teeth erupt. Sealing those surfaces with composite resin stops that kind of decay before it starts.
Why they’re worth it
Sealants are one of the most effective methods of preventing decay on the surfaces where they are placed. While it’s still possible for decay to develop between teeth — which is why flossing stays important — sealants significantly reduce the overall chance of cavities.
They’re quick to place, completely painless, and especially valuable for children in the first years after their adult molars come in. Ask us at your child’s next check-up whether sealants make sense for them.
