What a crown does
A crown (cap) is a restoration placed on a tooth that has lost a lot of its structure — from a large cavity, a fracture, or after root canal treatment. There are various types of crowns, ranging from full porcelain to full metal; your dentist will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each kind for your situation.
The process
Making a crown involves a number of steps. It begins with preparing the tooth and taking impressions, after which a temporary crown is placed. The impressions are sent to the lab, where a mould of your teeth is poured and the crown is crafted. The completed crown is returned to our office; after inspection and any necessary adjustments, it is cemented onto your tooth.
When the lost structure is smaller than a crown calls for, a more conservative inlay or onlay may be the better restoration — that’s a judgement we make with you, never for you.
