No-Fear Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

We Love Treating Anxious Patients

Dentistry without the fear

At Serenity Dental, we are dedicated to helping patients with dental phobia. Our extensive experience working with anxious patients helps us understand your fear and address it appropriately. There is nothing more rewarding than helping a patient with years of dental neglect complete the much-needed dental care — and believe in the effectiveness of sedation dentistry administered in a gentle, caring manner.

Our practice is designed with spa-like touches, giving it a calm and relaxing feel. Although the place is peaceful and serene and our care is compassionate and gentle, we understand that some patients have severe dental phobia and need sedation dentistry for additional comfort and security.

You will no longer be afraid of sitting in the dental chair once you experience our compassionate care combined with sedation dentistry. If your phobia makes you avoid much-needed dental care, you’ll be surprised how easily you can get the treatment you need in just a couple of sessions. We use sedation for everything from dental hygiene visits to complex treatments such as teeth removals.

How a sedation visit feels

Sedation dentistry works by taking a pill before your dental procedure. The sedative ensures you are relaxed throughout the process. We welcome you with dim lights and relaxing music; after taking the pill you’re given a warm, thick blanket and placed under monitoring to observe your vital signs. Dr. Mangat takes it from there — and when you’re finished, you’re ready to heal and enjoy the results.

Before the procedure

You arrive an hour before your procedure. We take your vitals — blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen level — to ensure they remain in the normal range throughout your appointment. You’re then given the sedative pill in powdered form, we offer blankets, dim the lights, and wait 45 minutes to an hour for you to relax.

During the procedure

The sedation creates positive effects of drowsiness and relaxation — you feel free from worry, stress, and anxiety. Your limbs may feel heavy and relaxed. Throughout the visit you stay in control: conscious but deeply relaxed, able to communicate with the dental team the whole time. We monitor your vitals throughout.

After the procedure

Once complete, we notify your companion. Since oral sedation has lingering effects, a responsible adult companion should drive you home and stay with you for the next 24 hours. Avoid work, intense physical activity, operating machinery, and important decisions for 24 hours — and stay well-hydrated.

Sedation FAQs

You may be a candidate if you have one or more of the following: fear of dental procedures; a history of traumatic dental experiences; a very sensitive gag reflex; extremely sensitive teeth; problems getting numb; difficulty opening your mouth; a need for complex dental work or surgical procedures; years of neglected oral health; a habit of making then cancelling dental appointments; anxiety about freezing; embarrassment about your smile but fear of the dental chair; or a tendency to ignore dental problems until the pain is unbearable.
Yes. We review your health history thoroughly during your initial visit to make sure there is no contraindication to the sedative agent. Make us aware of any allergies, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Once the pill is taken you feel relaxed, drowsy, and very comfortable — a worry- and anxiety-free dental appointment. You remain aware of your surroundings and responsive, but in a very relaxed state of mind, with very little to no memory of the procedure afterwards.
No — our patients who have experienced sedation dentistry at our office often compliment us on the procedures being painless.
Easy to administer: just a pill in powdered form. Non-invasive: perfect for anyone with a fear of needles. You’re conscious: comfortable and relaxed without losing consciousness. Amnesia: little to no memory of the procedure — especially beneficial for severe dental anxiety. Safety: oral sedatives are very safe, and side effects are less common.
Yes — we go over pre-procedural instructions during your pre-sedation consultation visit. You’ll need a responsible, healthy adult companion as your designated driver, staying with you for the next 24 hours.
Typically four to six hours, though in some cases the effects may last up to 24 hours.

Patients who overcame their fear

“Dr. Mangat and wonderful team of Serenity Dental… I cannot tell you how you have changed my life with your dental work. For years I neglected my teeth — I made and cancelled numerous appointments at different offices because I never had the courage to sit in that chair. Walking through your doors the first time was not easy, but I was blown away by the friendliness and care I received. Thank you for giving me a beautiful smile I’m so proud of — you have taken away the fear of the dentist I had for years.”

— Debra, sedation patient

“Dr. Mangat and her team made my visit so positive! I have been terrified of going to the dentist and Dr. Mangat has ridden me of that fear — I am actually looking forward to my next appointment. This has never been the case, ever, in my life! You are giving me back my smile and taking away something that has bothered me every day for so long. You have changed my life and I say that with sincerity.”
